Beers

Beers

A full range of Thwaites awarding winning ales supported by Guest ales from a range of other breweries

Guest Beers

In addition to our core beers we enhance our range with the inclusion of guest beers from all corners of the UK, typically we have two guest beers at any one time, a traditional dark brewed bitter and a blonde hoppy beer.

Recent brews have been from The Titanic Brewery in Staffordshire, Greene King in Suffolk, Belhaven in Scotland and Shepherd Neame in Kent to name but a few. Forthcoming brews are to be from Hook Norton in Oxford, Hydes in Manchester and Batemans of Lincolnshire with more being added to our portfolio.

We also supplement our core range with an additional 15 plus beers from the Thwaites Craft Brewery, a different brew every month and 4 seasonal ales in support.

Continental Beers

To support our range of real ales we also have the following continental bottled beers permanently in stock;- Chimay, Brooklyn Lager, Bacchus Framboizenbeer, Timmermans Kriek, Timmermans Strawberry Beer, Singha, Holsten Pils and more.

A range which truly supports and enhances our drinks range

Core Beers

original

THWAITES ORIGINAL 3.6% abv

THE STORY:

A beer that’s as original today as it was in 1807, when Daniel Thwaites himself began brewing and the mill workers of Lancashire would seek out a refreshing drink after a long day’s toil. This thirst-quenching 3.6% session beer is just as satisfying today as it was back then.

TASTING NOTES:

Brewed using premium grade Maris Otter malt and a blend of traditional English hops including Goldings and Fuggles, this amber
coloured session beer is easy drinking with a malty flavour and crisp bitter aftertaste.

FOOD MATCH:

A classic beer to match with cooked meats and mild cheeses – try with a ploughman’s or your Sunday roast.

wainwright

THWAITES WAINWRIGHT 4.1% abv

THE STORY:

This exquisitely lovely golden ale was created by the Thwaites brewers to celebrate Alfred Wainwright, the renowned Lakeland author who was born in Blackburn. It has been crafted as a labour of love by Thwaites with the same passion that Alfred Wainwright put into his detailed walking guides. Like a walk on the fells it is both rewarding and refreshing. Voted World’s Best Golden Ale at the 2012 World Beer Awards.

TASTING NOTES:

Wainwright is a refreshing golden ale with subtle sweetness from the Maris Otter malts and the special mix of hops give a delicate citrus fruit overtone.

FOOD MATCH:

Perfect with most fresh fish dishes like smoked salmon with lemon wedges. Also try it with a fragrant Thai green curry.

bomber

THWAITES LANCASTER BOMBER 4.4% abv

THE STORY:

Best of British! This double award winning extra special bitter is named after the WWII airplanes that made the famous Dambuster raids. Twice voted Best English Bitter at the European Beer Star Awards and winner of the silver medal in the Bitter category of the 2012 International Beer Challenge.

TASTING NOTES:

Brewed using pale ale and crystal malts for a rich full-bodied bitter flavour with biscuit and fruit malt aromas. The finely balanced hop character is enriched by the late addition of Styrian Goldings as a dry hop in each cask to give a more prominent floral hop aroma and warming aftertaste.

FOOD MATCH:

Great with Lancashire cheese of course! A wonderful match for tomato based dishes, stews and barbequed meats. Also great with orange flavoured chocolate.

nuttyblack

THWAITES NUTTY BLACK 3.3% abv

THE STORY:

Discover something a little different with curiously dark and thoroughly delicious Nutty Black. This dark ruby mild is one of only four beers to win Champion Beer of Britain twice, and voted World’s Best Dark Mild at the 2012 World Beer Awards.

TASTING NOTES:

Dark ruby mild with a hint of nuttiness but unmistakable roasted and bittersweet flavours. Brewed with only the finest dark kiln roasted malts and English barley for a bittersweet flavour and lightly hopped with Fuggles and Goldings.

FOOD MATCH:

Nutty Black is great with strong smoky flavours such as strong blue or smoked cheese, smoked fish such as mackerel or spicy chorizo sausage. It’s also the perfect accompaniment to desserts such as a sweet fruit tart.
